How to Find Your Skin’s Undertone

Find your skin undertone to match makeup

Have you ever ordered makeup online in a gorgeous color only to find that it looks, er, off when you put it on? 😳 Do you have a drawer full of makeup that you won’t wear because it does not complement your complexion? That is probably because the undertone of the makeup clashes with the undertones of your skin.

We see predominant colors, such as red, blue, grey or white. Undertones, or subtle blends of several colors, affect how the predominant color looks. For example, red with blue undertones looks different from red with orange undertones. Here, we help you identify your primary skin tone and undertones so you can confidently select makeup that looks great with your complexion. 💄

What are Skin Undertones?

Painters and interior designers know that colors have underlying hues that affect how one color looks next to another. The same is true for your skin.

Your primary skin tone is visible to the eye. You may have fair, medium, olive or dark skin. Your skin undertone is the natural hue just below the skin’s surface, defined as cool, warm or neutral.

Many people assume that certain skin tones have correlated undertones, such as a light complexion always having neutral undertones or dark skin having warm undertones. Actually, different undertones occur across all skin tones.

Cool undertones have hues of blue and pink. Warm undertones tend toward golden, peach or yellowish hues. Neutral undertones have cool and warm hues. Those with olive complexions may have neutral or slightly warm undertones. Knowing your skin undertones will help you select a makeup palette of the best colors for your skin tone.

How to Find Your Skin Undertone

There are several ways to find your undertone. You may already know what colors look best next to your skin. Do you favor silver jewelry over gold? Silver complements cool undertones, and gold is flattering to people with warm undertones. If you can wear both, you probably have neutral undertones.

Another way to find your undertone is to look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. If your veins have a greenish tint, you probably have warm undertones. People with blue or purplish-looking veins have cool undertones. If the veins do not have much color or appear both blueish and greenish, you most likely have neutral undertones.

Match Your Makeup to You Skin’s Undertone

There are various methods to determine your skin undertone. You may already have a sense of what colors look best on you. Pay attention to whether silver or gold jewelry suits you better.

Silver tends to complement cool undertones, while gold flatters warm undertones.

If both gold and silver look great on you, it’s most likely that you have neutral undertones.

Foundation for Cool Skin Undertones

If you have cool undertones with hints of blue or pink, look for foundation shades that have a rosy or slightly bluish base. Opt for shades with “cool” or “rosy” in their descriptions. Avoid foundations that appear too yellow or golden. Those are only going to make you look very pasty. 😟

Try shades like porcelain, rose beige, or cool ivory, which will beautifully complement your cool undertones and create a balanced, even-toned finish!

Foundation for Warm Skin Undertones

If you have warm undertones with golden, peach, or yellowish hues, go for foundation shades that have a warm or golden undertone. Look for descriptions like “warm,” “golden,” or “peachy.” Steer clear of foundations with pink undertones. Pinky foundation will make your skin look ashy 🫣.

Instead, go for shades like golden beige, honey, or warm tan, which will enhance your warm undertones and give your complexion a radiant, sun-kissed glow.

Eye Makeup with Skin Undertone

We think that “cool undertone” ladies should choose soft blue, purple, gray or silver eyeshadow color.  No need for mascara so long as you have a Mega Volume Set of eyelash extensions to complete your look.  Warm undertones will always mix well with earthy browns, bronzes, gold and orange – but might want to consider brown eyeliner instead of black (even with black eyelash extensions).  This brown liner/black lash combo will really make your eyes POP!  😍

Lastly but not least, our lucky ladies with neutral undertones can really play and explore with all kinds of colors from pinks, mauves, browns and blues. You can really just use whatever color matches your mood!
